Exploring Cambodia with G Adventures: A Journey Through Culture, History, and Community Impact

Embarking on my G Adventures trip, The Cambodia Experience, was nothing short of phenomenal. Our group was small, with just 10 of us plus our guide, which made the trip feel both intimate and engaging. One aspect I loved about this experience was its 100% Ripple Score. This means every dollar I spent contributed directly to local businesses and communities, creating a positive impact that ripples through the places we visited.

Our Journey Begins: Ho Chi Minh City

We kicked off our journey in Ho Chi Minh City, where the streets are alive with energy, scooters whiz by, and there’s no shortage of cultural gems. This bustling city offered a fascinating blend of historical landmarks and vibrant local life. It set the perfect tone for what was to come: a series of meaningful, immersive experiences through Cambodia and beyond.

Our day trip to the Mekong Delta from Ho Chi Minh City was an unforgettable adventure. The boat ride through the delta was truly a highlight, offering serene views of lush riverbanks and local life along the water. Gliding through the winding canals felt like stepping back in time, giving us a glimpse into the daily rhythms of the region. To top it off, we were introduced to cobra-infused liquor—a bold and unique local specialty. Tasting it added an adventurous twist to the day, making this experience one of the most memorable parts of our journey in Vietnam.

Phnom Penh: A City of Resilience

Next up was Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital, where we delved into the country's complex history. Our visit to the Killing Fields and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum was deeply moving, shedding light on Cambodia’s painful past and the resilience of its people. Yet, despite its history, Phnom Penh is alive with hope, culture, and incredible hospitality. This stop left a lasting impression, reminding us of the strength that lies in both remembrance and moving forward.

One of the most profound moments of my trip was encountering Chum Mey, a survivor of the Khmer Rouge regime. While he didn’t speak during our visit to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, I had the chance to purchase his book, which detailed his incredible struggles and survival. Reading his story later added such a personal and emotional layer to the history we were learning about. His resilience is truly inspiring, and being able to learn about his experiences firsthand through his words was an unforgettable part of my journey.

Siem Reap and the Magic of Angkor Wat

Siem Reap was, without a doubt, the highlight of my journey. Visiting Angkor Wat was a surreal experience—the sheer magnitude, intricate carvings, and historical significance of this ancient temple complex left me in awe. The early morning sunrise over Angkor Wat is something I’ll never forget. Siem Reap also offered a unique blend of local food options as well as some familiar Western dishes, which was perfect for those in the group who preferred a more familiar palette.

While Angkor Wat was undoubtedly a standout highlight of my time in Siem Reap, I also fell in love with the city itself and its welcoming people. The vibrant energy of the town, with its lively markets, charming streets, and the warmth of the locals, made it such a special place. One of the unforgettable experiences was visiting The Spa, where I received the best 2.5-hour massage I’ve ever had— and it was only $32! It was pure bliss, and the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring. Beyond its connection to Tomb Raider and the awe-inspiring temples, Siem Reap captured my heart with its unique blend of history, charm, and hospitality.

Before we left Siem Reap, our G for Good moment was spent at New Hope Cambodia’s Restaurant, a place with a purpose. Established in 2010, the restaurant provides valuable cooking and hospitality training to unemployed and often uneducated Khmers, helping them develop skills, confidence, and future employment opportunities. The ambiance and food were exceptional, and knowing that all funds generated directly support the New Hope Cambodia School Education program made the experience even more meaningful. It was a wonderful way to contribute to the local community while enjoying some of the best Cambodian cuisine I’ve had.

Wrapping Up in Bangkok, Thailand

Our trip concluded in vibrant Bangkok, a city where the old and new blend effortlessly. Exploring bustling markets and majestic temples was the perfect way to wrap up our journey. From the iconic Wat Arun to the lively street scenes, Bangkok added a dynamic layer to the experience. I decided to extend my stay for an extra two nights, and I’m so glad I did. This gave me the chance to dive deeper into the city’s energy and even experience my first-ever Muay Thai fight—something I’ll never forget! It was the perfect way to cap off an unforgettable adventure.

Final Thoughts

This G Adventures trip truly exceeded my expectations. The small group size allowed us to form a close bond, and our guide enriched each stop with insights and stories. Plus, knowing that my journey had a 100% ripple effect in supporting local communities made every moment even more meaningful.

For anyone considering a trip through Cambodia, I can’t recommend this journey enough—it’s not just a tour; it’s an immersive experience that leaves a lasting impact on you and the places you visit.

A special thank you to our Chief Experience Officer, Jack, who was absolutely fantastic! Jack’s knowledge, enthusiasm, and dedication made this trip even more memorable. His passion for sharing the culture and history of the places we visited truly enhanced the experience, and his attention to detail ensured everything ran smoothly. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide—thank you, Jack, for making this journey one for the books!
